Kennel Club all breeds health survey. Here is an extract of that survey:
The Leonberger Breed
A total of 350 forms were sent out and 109 were returned, representing 223 live dogs. This breed had a 31.1% response rate (109/350) and it represented 0.79% of all returns (109/13,741).
Mortality data
A total of 47 deaths were reported and this represents 0.30% of all deaths reported in the survey (47/ 15,881). The median age at death for the Leonberger breed was 7 years and 1 month. (min= 5 months, mac= 12 years and 8 months) and this was lower than the overall median of 11 years and 3 months (across all breeds). Table 1 shows the causes of death for the Leonberger breed.

Last year, the Leonberger health Foundation in the states did an international online health survey, and the cancer results reported were even worse:
513 dogs listed in the survey
98 dogs listed as deceased
Approximately 60% of deaths are cancer/tumor related
I recall seeing a survey done by the Czech leonberger club some years ago, and the cancer rates were similarly high.
The problem with all these surveys is that they are based on voluntary returns, and human nature being what it is, people are more likely to be stirred into action when they lose a beloved pet prematurely. They are the people more likely to remember the survey form and want to do something- e.g complete it and send it in- on behalf of the dog they sadly lost at a young age. The people who own old dogs who die in later years are the least likely to complete and return health survey forms. That is why prevalence studies are so very important. These sorts of studies preselect a group of test subjects and follow them through their whole lives to determine what percentage have issues, compared to the whole group.
However, having said all that, there is no still doubt that cancer- especially osteosarcoma- is the number one cause of death in our breed. The evidence is overwhelming. That is why the LCGB health subcommittee has shifted its focus over the past couple of years to trying to drum up awareness / support for the international research project into osteosarcoma in our breed that is currently underway. We have shared the details in the newsletter, on the website, in person at our club shows, at the AGM, at the ILU meetings and through the internet in general, but it takes time for awareness to really take root. And nothing is harder, as an owner when you hear that awful diagnosis, then to remember about taking samples and sending them off. The grief is too much. Nevertheless, here is a link to the details once more.

LCGB - Health - Osteosarcoma
www.leonbergerclubofgb.co.uk
Osteosarcoma is a primary bone cancer most frequently found in large or giant breeds of dogs. It is an aggressive cancer, often metastasising into secondary malignancies throughout the dog's body. It is probably the most common cancer found in the Leonberger.
