BIO-SENSOR / SUPER DOG
The U.S. Military developed a program in the 1970’s called "Bio Sensor." (Became publicly know and is often referred to as the "Super Dog" Program.) The program was developed to improve the performance of dogs used for military purposes.

The basic premise of the program is that early neurological stimulation exercises could affect the performance of the dog. The Army’s research revealed that early stimulation of the puppy from the 3rd day through the 16th day influence rapid neurological growth and development.

We incorporate the Bio-Sensor or Super Dog Program into our socialization and temperament development regimen. The Bio Sensor program easily fit into our established puppy rearing process and supports our Values.

David and I have always believed that handling dogs at an early age helps with the physical and social development of the puppy.

Below are the six Bio Sensor exercises designed to stimulate the neurological system of the puppy. I have incorporated these exercises into our daily puppy routine. Each puppy is put through the following exercises once daily:

1. TACTILE STIMULATION - Holding the pup in one hand, the handler gently stimulates (tickles) the pup between the toes on any one foot using a Q-tip. It is not necessary to see that the pup is feeling the tickle.
Time of stimulation 3 - 5 seconds.

2. HEAD HELD ERECT - Using both hands, the pup is held perpendicular to the ground, (straight up), so that its head is directly above its tail. This is an upwards position.
Time of stimulation 3 - 5 seconds.

3. HEAD POINTED DOWN – Holding the pup firmly with both hands the head is reversed and is pointed downward so that it is pointing towards the ground.
Time of stimulation 3 - 5 seconds.

4. SUPINE POSITION - Hold the pup so that its back is resting in the palm of both hands with its muzzle facing the ceiling. The pup while on its back is allowed to sleep struggle.
Time of stimulation 3-5 seconds.

5. THERMAL STIMULATION – Use a damp towel that has been cooled in a refrigerator for at least five minutes. Place the pup on the towel, feet down. Do not restrain it from moving.
Time of stimulation 3-5 seconds.

I strictly follow the Bio Sensor program with the following exceptions. The program is started on the fourth day. On the 3rd day our puppies travel to the Veterinarian to have tails docked and dew claws removed. The trip to the Vet is more than enough neurological stimulation. I also use the cold metal top of my clothes dryer as the source of my thermal stimulation. This is when I also weigh the puppies.

These exercises improve the development of the puppy’s neurological systems by early stimulation and stress. Five benefits have been observed in dogs that were exposed to the Bio Sensor stimulation exercises:
- Improved Cardiovascular Performance,
- Stronger Heart Beats,
- Stronger Adrenal Glands,
- More Tolerance to Stress, and
- Greater Resistance to Disease.

I do not substitute the Bio Sensor method for socialization and handling of the puppies. The Bio Sensor method is a well-documented puppy development tool. Many puppies bred for field, security, and guide work are introduced to the Bio Sensor Program as part of their development.

volgens mij gaat het om het stimuleren van neurologische ontwikkeling.
van de 3e t/m de 16e dag, wat voor later een positieve invloed zou hebben, dat deze neurologische reacties, om het zo maar te noemen, kan even het goede woord niet vinden. later veel beter zouden zijn dan zonder.

Ik ken een aantal fokkers in Nederland die deze test ook doen bij hun pups, en zij zweren erbij.

Zelf vind ik het gevoelsmatig wat zielig, maar dat zal ongetwijfeld wel meevallen.

Zou wel eens willen weten hoe ze kunnen bewijzen dat deze 5 voordelen optreden: je kunt dezelfde pup niet 2x op een andere manier grootbrengen..... Dus waarmee vergeleken? Ik vind het nogal pretentieus.

verder kan ik me over dit onderwerp een hele discussie herinneren op een engelstalig werkhondenforum waarin er nogal wat zeer ervaren fokkers waren die niks van dit alles deden en "toch" zeer stabiele, sterke pups hadden. Veel gehoorde kritiek was dat de invloed van de genetische aanleg totaal niet meegenomen werd, en verder dat deze methode in het leger was toegepast en de algemene kwalitiet van de honden die binnen het leger werden opgevoed en afgericht nou niet bepaald om over naar huis te schrijven was (bovendien moeten die nog steeds heel veel honden van buitenaf aanschaffen, dus zoveel helpt het blijkbaar ook niet).

Je gaat je bovendien afvragen hoe pups het al die tijd zonder dit programma gedaan hebben

Misschien als je je pups normaal gesproken al die tijd laat opgroeien in een steriele omgeving waarin niks gebeurt en er geen interactie is met anderen, dat je dan iets aan zo'n programma hebt. Maar met een beetje normale interactie krijgt een pup m.i. al vroeg te maken met allerlei prikkels en "stress", zoals even opgepakt worden als je moeders meehelp met opruimen, moeders die even weggaat, etc.
