My Fellow Dog Trainers,
Recently there have been some video footages on the internet that have created a lot of upsets, and I feel I owe you guys some explanations.
The videos were filmed several years ago in China while I was conducting a seminar. The dog in the videos had several aggression issues and had already bitten people more than once. When I first went over there, the people told me about the problems and asked me to fix them. I first tried to sort out the issues with positive approaches, but the result was inconsistent and I only had limited time to make the dog manageable.
During one of the protection sessions, the dog tried to bite his handler again and that’s when I stepped in to apply force on the dog. It was a moment of emergency and there was no time to allow much thinking. I could choose to just stand there and tell my student what to do risking him to get bitten, or I could act immediately according to my instincts with whatever equipment available. I was aware of the cameras around me but I chose to do what I knew best at that time to put the dog in line. After the pressure the dog showed he was under control without being aggressive to me and his handler anymore, and we continued the work without further pressure. At the end of the session I asked the decoy to let the dog have the sleeve and let him carry it off the field with his handler with a successful feeling.
In another obedience session, the dog had the tendency to come in front of his handler in heeling, and every time he did that, he would begin to challenge his handler. Having been given limited tools in the seminar, I used a whip to prevent him from doing that. The dog also had a constant problem with the Out, sometimes not outing, sometimes outing slowly, sometimes giving a dirty bite after the out, and sometimes showing aggression to the handler in this exercise. Because the aggression problem between the dog and his handler was serious and I had tried to solve the problem with positive approaches and minimum force with inconsistent effects, I took the dog by force in this session, hoping that the dog will have a strong impression of the exercise and continue to Out correctly for his handler even after I was gone. After the sessions with this dog, I explained to my students, dog training is not about using force on the animal. This is an extreme case and I don’t normally train and teach in this manner.
I know the video footages are very offensive for you to watch, but please understand whoever uploaded the videos had only the intentions to destroy my reputation, as he did not show you the whole picture and the truth but edited the footages to show you a Kodak moment. Why would I put my career at risk brutalizing an animal in front of 50 people and all these cameras? Not every Chinese is a dog eater! People in China coming to a dog training seminar are dog lovers too just like you. Haven’t you once thought why no one in the video ever tried to stop me or complained, if what they were seeing was unjustified? Because they understood I was putting myself at risk helping someone to control an aggressive dog. But I put myself on the line for this and later on people took advantages of it and try to tear me apart. But what is the most disappointing for me, is some of you that are making such nasty statements about me, have actually received help from me in the past and thanked me for that, and instead of telling the truth about my character, you chose to join the attack and lie.
May be it is hard for you to believe, but I do love dogs myself also, and I care very much about the students attending my seminars, and I never wish any accidents to happen. When someone has been bitten by a dog, it could scar him for life physically and mentally, and this could end his career as a dog trainer. When handling an aggressive dog, I have to be prepared to defend my student and myself. The dog in the video was never injured by me. I have no pleasure to be cruel to animals and I don’t believe in using unnecessary force.
In the past few days I have been receiving various degrees of threats on Facebook, by email, and by telephone. Please keep my family out as they have nothing to do with this. I would like to apologize to you guys for the upsets the videos have caused you. I understand your reactions, but what would you do when you see someone that believes in you is about to get bitten? Are you going to stand there and watch or do the best you could to help him, even when you have to put your reputation on the line? Unless you are put in the same situation and know the whole truth, it is not fair to judge. Thank you very much for listening.
