Politiehond Bumper doet rondje Rotterdam

25 juli 2017 - Politiehond Bumper groeit hard. Dat is te zien in het meest recente filmpje dat de politie Eenheid Rotterdam online heeft gezet. Onlangs ging de populaire hond met zijn begeleider op toer door Rotterdam.
Zo loopt hij voor de Markthal langs en gaat hij een stukje reizen met de metro. Ook is te zien dat Bumper plaatsneemt in de Watertaxi en over het water scheurt langs onder meer de SS Rotterdam en andere grote schepen die voorbijkomen op de Maas.
Bumper is de eerste politiehond die door de Eenheid Rotterdam zelf wordt opgeleid.

Zieke legerhond krijgt groots afscheid

28 juli 2017 - Een 10-jarige zwarte labrador heeft in de Verenigde Staten een prachtig vaarwel gekregen nadat hij moest worden ingeslapen. De viervoeter diende tot drie keer toe in Afghanistan tot hij in 2014 met pensioen ging.

Honderden mensen hadden zich in de Amerikaanse staat Michigan verzameld om Cena de laatste eer te bewijzen. Cena speurde bommen op voor de Amerikaanse mariniers. Toen hij in 2014 met pensioen mocht, ging hij bij Jeff DeYoung wonen, met wie hij zijn eerste missie naar Afghanistan beleefde. De viervoeter moest Young troost en ondersteuning bieden. De marinier had namelijk te kampen met een posttraumatische stressstoornis.
DeYoung had dan ook een bijzondere band met de viervoeter en toen Cena kanker bleek te hebben en moest worden ingeslapen, besloot hij een groots afscheid te organiseren: „Mijn hele volwassen leven heb ik Cena bij me gehad. Toen ik 19 was, aan de andere kant van de oceaan zat en leerde hoe ik mijn verantwoordelijkheid moest nemen, had ik Cena. En nu ben ik 27 en moet ik vaarwel zeggen tegen een van de belangrijkste hoofdstukken uit mijn leven.”

DeYoung herinnerde zich momenten dat hij Cena over rivieren droeg en hoe hij als pantser fungeerde toen ze zwaar onder vuur lagen van de Taliban. Anderzijds hield Cena hem warm tijdens koude woestijnnachten en bood hij hem troost toen hij in drie weken zeven van zijn kameraden verloor.
Woensdag vierde DeYoung het bijzondere leven van Cena door voor een laatste keer met hem in een jeep rond te rijden. Nadat Cena was ingeslapen werd hij in een koffer met de Amerikaanse vlag eromheen naar buiten gedragen.
„Iedere hond die aan de andere kant van de oceaan heeft gediend, zou precies hetzelfde verdienen als wat ik hier voor Cena heb gedaan. Of misschien wel meer”, aldus DeYoung.
